First Steps to Stop Thinking and Start Doing

Let’s face it. It’s easier said than done. You have probably been told by most people around to “just start”. However, there are a lot of factors that determine whether you’ll do something or not. In most cases, these are usually internal factors.

Take a moment and remember the last time you wanted to do something but never did it. How did that happen? You fell in love with the idea. You went ahead and did some research. You thought of the people who have done it and are now reaping the fruits of their labor. But in the end, you never did anything.

In our modern world, knowledge is not power by itself. Applied knowledge is true power. This means that you will only know your potential when you stop thinking about things and start doing them. Today, we are going to discuss five proven steps to help you become an intelligent doer. Let’s get started!

1. Manage your fear

Fear is not a bad thing. It protects you from danger. However, when not controlled, it can become insidious. Most people have brilliant ideas but problems arise when it’s time to act on them. In most cases, fear controls peoples’ lives. This is why most people prefer security to freedom.

To become fearless, you have to change your thinking. Do not think of failure as a negative thing but as a learning experience. Every time you fall, you get to learn something.

For instance, let’s say your goal is to write a book. If you thought of the number of pages you’ll have to write to accomplish this goal, you might end up avoiding it altogether.

The best thing you can do for yourself is breaking down your goals. So, even if you only write 200 words every day, your goal becomes doable. Splitting your goals will help you take action and move forward.

3. Eliminate distractions

There will always be something that needs to get done when you are working on something important. Or you have thirty unread mails that you need to reply to. Distractions will always be there. Therefore, it’s important to know and eliminate them before you start working on something important.

You should put your mobile phone on silent to avoid being distracted by phone calls, messages, and emails. If you are going to use your computer while working, ensure all distractive sites are blocked. Also, inform your loved ones that you’ll be working at a specific time to avoid unnecessary distractions.

Also, learn to say “No”. You see, saying “Yes” to everything is very easy. Most people would rather please others than please themselves. You have to keep in mind that saying “yes” to something is also saying “no” to something else. For instance, saying “yes” to someone else’s solicitation is also saying “no” to accomplishing your goals.

4. Practice makes perfect

You will learn new things by dealing with real issues and questions. Forming the habit of doing things right away is one of the best things you can do for yourself and the people around you.

People who procrastinate never get anything done. Opportunities will only come to people who take action. Therefore, reduce the time you spend reading, researching and planning and start practicing what you’ve learned.

5. Set deadlines

Create a system that encourages you to take action and make progress. For instance, to complete your book, you’ll need to divide the number of pages or words with the number of days you’ll need. So, if your book will have about 6000 words and you are going to write 200 words every day, you should comfortably complete it in 30 days. 

Having a deadline in mind makes it easier for us to take action and accomplish our goals. Creating a plan and following it to the end will help you achieve the results you dream of. Therefore, don’t work blindly. Create a daily plan today and follow it.

Do not forget to celebrate your victories. When you accomplish your goals, reward yourself properly. You can go for a tour, watch a movie or spend more time with your loved ones. Rewarding yourself will motivate you to work harder when you get back to work. Also, you’ll condition your mind to associate taking action with pleasure instead of pain.


It’s time to stop thinking and strategizing and start doing things. All successful people take action whenever they can. And so should you. Achieving your goals is easy. All you need to do is take control of your life by managing your fears, breaking down big goals, eliminating distractions and setting deadlines.
